Overview: Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Bourbon is very good bourbon that most people can reliably find and get at a reasonable price. "Quality" bourbons are becoming more and more difficult for a lot of people to find, especially cask strength with a bit of age on them. If this sounds like you, this bottle is absolutely worth trying.
Coming in at 116.8 proof and typically available in the $50 range, Rare Breed BP is something I almost always have "on hand". As you may know from my reviews, I tend to gravitate toward higher proof whiskey but this bottle is somewhat unique due to its proof, availability and price. When compared this to others of similar availability and price, it stands up very well.
Age: No age statement (a blend of 6, 8 and 12 year bourbons)
Mashbill: 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley
Nose: Nuttiness, caramel and toffee combined with the classic bourbon notes of citrus and a bit of cherry. The ethanol from the proof is there but not overpowering, just enough to remind you to be prepared for your first sip.
Palate: First sip made me think "is this a rye?". The proof plus the high rye mash-bill produced a lot of spice but, after a few more sips, the other notes came to the forefront. Sweetness and nuts... peanut brittle anyone? The oak from the age starts to come through but nothing astringent, more sweet oak and some smokiness.
Finish: A surprisingly good and long finish with some complexity. Black pepper and spice fades into more sweet notes.. vanilla, caramel and cherry for good measure. This finish is the highlight of this bottle, especially when considering the price.
